Tom wants a weapon!!!

Hey guys.

I've been looking at a few weapons from Ehobby Asia and I have a few that I'd like your opinions on if someone has the time to take a look.

I don't suppose anyone has or knows where I could trial one of these? I'm currently leaning towards the FAMAS or the SIG552.

Also what is the difference between a gearbox type 2, gearbox type 3 or a high cycle?

Re: Tom wants a weapon!!!

I've bought my fair share of stuff from eHobby, including my old Marui Next Gen SCAR-H. However I'd fully recommend buying from Echigoya, they're based in Japan and their customer service is fantastic.

Sig SG552 - Sig 552's are awesome, I would buy one purely for that reason. No one's worked on one specifically, but internally it'll be the same as any other V3 gearbox.
M993 Commando - Standard M4, nothing much else to say there.
M16A2 - Will shoot real good accuracy like. Long as fuck. 1001mm, that's a metre long AR. MIght as well get a musket for maneuverability.
FAMAS SV - This thing is OLD. V1 gearbox, the first AEG Marui made. Slow motor, creaky as anything. The Metal Gear Solid in me wants one so bad though.
AK47 High Cycle - The newest gun of the bunch. For me, would be between this and the Sig. Runs a really fast motor for extreme rate of fire (not as useful on semi, still shoots quick though). Comes with high cap mag, unusable at TAG.

Not really anywhere to trial this stuff in Christchurch unfortunately :(

V2 and V3 have the same functionality. Neither will shoot any better than the other. High cycle just refers to the way the gearbox / motor are set up for high rate of fire. Eg: the AK High Cycle is still just using a V3 gearbox but with a crazy fast motor.

Re: Tom wants a weapon!!!

I really wanted a famas back in the day. It was the first AEG that Marui mass produced (Gen 1 Gearbox) and it had a few problems. It was accurate and had a high rof but wasn't good on semi auto and had a special motor which was prone to breaking down and irreplaceable. Also was full plastic and would allegedly twist 15 degrees end to end if you tried.

All of those guns except the FAMAS would be good except they're all plastic, not that there's anything wrong with it. If you have a look on the free shipping page on echigoya guns there are some nifty full metal recoil next gen guns. Sure they're a bit more expensive but not as much as you think considering you'll likely get reamed on shipping from ehobby. The M33 commando is 400 USD including shipping from ehobby and the M4A1 Socom is 460USD including shipping from echigoya.

Me and Eda have the CQBRs from Echigoya. Just some food for thought :)

Also you could check out www.battlesoftnz.co.nz. I'm pretty sure this guy still imports guns.

Re: Tom wants a weapon!!!

Awesome replies. Cheers.

I'll go ahead and cross the FAMAS off the list. Everything on the Free shipping list is still quite a bit more expensive than say the sig+shipping but thanks for pointing that out. I'll check back there regularly.

As far as Battery, charger and magazines go, are they easy to get in NZ or should I be looking to add them to the order?

I'd get the magazines from the overseas supplier but the batteries and chargers you could source locally - we all have.

This is who we all use for batteries, etc.

Also, just in case you're not already aware you will need a permit and lawful reason to import the airsoft gun. TAG can support you with this.

Re: Tom wants a weapon!!!

As above, the elusive Alroys is our main supply of batteries, chargers and such. Mags definitely just get with the gun at time of purchase.

As Flazz has recommend, the Marui Next Gen guns are fantastic, a lot of upgrades both internally and externally over their previous guns.

You're looking at $430 excl GST for the SIG and $620 excl GST for the Next Gen M4A1. Admittedly it's a bit of a jump to go next gen (however I highly recommend it) and both guns will shoot fantastic so it's really what works for you.

Extra Bonus: If you go Next Gen you'll have magazine interchangeability with most of us :D

Re: Tom wants a weapon!!!

Apart from the flashy effects such as recoil etc what advantages do next gen weapons have?

Re: Tom wants a weapon!!!

They've moved from making the bodies out of plastic to making them out of metal, which is always nice. Bolt stop feature on empty mag is pretty cool too.

The gearbox internals are a lot easier to work on. A lot of the annoyances of V2/V3 gearboxes have been fixed, ie: main spring is no longer under pressure when you're disassembling/reassembling the shell, trigger and anti-reversal latch stay in place when re-assembling, tappet plate spring is now installed after gearbox assembly which is easier.

So long as your gun is front wired, it's also a LOT easier to change springs to get FPS just right (unscrew buffer tube, change spring, screw back on)

I'd recommend because of the above. Both guns will definitely be top notch though. As an aside, check my review.
