Christchurch man shot in face

A Christchurch man will need surgery to his eye and face after being shot at point-blank range in what seems to be an unprovoked attack.

Police are asking for help to identify the offender who shot the 29-year-old man with a BB air-pistol on Hereford Street at around 1.30am on Sunday August 29.

"One pellet has hit his forehead, with the other pellet penetrating his right eye, causing severe damage to that eye," Detective Sergeant Mark Reid said.

Surgery was needed to remove the pellet from his eye and the man would need further surgery, Detective Constable Hamish Beer told NZPA.

"He is doing okay, I believe this is an isolated incident and it doesn't look as though the victim and offender knew each other."

Closed circuit television footage shows a blond man in a white T-shirt and jeans walking with a woman with long blonde hair in a black and grey hoodie and shorts. The victim came up to walk alongside the pair just before the offender pulled a black pistol from his jeans and fired twice.

The woman then grabbed the man's arm and the pair casually walked away.

Re: Christchurch man shot in face

This is getting out of hand, Here's another incident

Woman shot in slug gun drive-by

A woman has been shot in the backside and two primary school children also shot at in a series of "drive-by" slug gun attacks in Palmerston North, say police.

Five targeted assaults have been reported this month, with members of the public and cars being shot at by assailants wielding what police believe to be slug or paintball guns.

Kylie Edmonds, 33, was left with a welt the size of a 50 cent piece, the Manawatu Standard reported.

She was crossing Broadway Ave when she felt a sharp pain in her backside. She heard laughter as a car roared off.

On September 15 two primary school children were shot at on their way home from school in Ashhurst, which was especially "alarming", said Palmerston North police operations manager Acting Senior Sergeant Phil Skoglund.

"It's just the immature and dangerous behaviour ... it gets a lot more serious when we are starting to look at airguns being fired in the direction of persons.

An air gun was used to kill a police officer in Auckland, and someone could easily lose their sight if shot in the eye, he said.
