New/Keen/Many Questions :D

Hey guys, so I've been looking into airsoft for a while now and have fallen in love with what I'm seeing and am really keen to try this out for real. I would really like to come out for a game with you guys soon to get a feel for the sports before I invest any more time/resources in it (and trust me I've already invested a LOT of time into researching what kind of gun I want) and I've got a pretty good idea on what I want. What I don't have is first hand experience with the AEG and GBBR department. I already own a GBB Pistol (WE M9 B. Burton) and I love it to bits. So I would really love to get out there and play with you guys, maybe even try out some of your guys' guns with permission to see the difference between AEG and GBBR and get to know the ups and downs of the guns you guys have so that I may get a good idea of what to look out for and what to avoid.

A few questions while I'm here.

-Do you guys have goggles for hire that will fit over prescription glasses? Otherwise I would probably have to wait until I can afford to buy a pair for myself or some contact lenses.

-I understand that it is $20 to hire club gear, but I read somewhere on the forums that you get first 4 games free (i.e. no need to pay to be a member to play) then I read somewhere else on the forums that the first game is free. Could someone verify this for me? (I don't mind either way but would be nice to be correctly informed).

-Does TAG have a club armorer that I could go through (once I become a member) to help me import guns from overseas? (I hate hate hate HATE dealing with customs, as do most importers or overseas shoppers)

I do have a myriad of questions pertaining to the sports itself, about the types of guns, companies and blah blah blah, but I would imagine most of you have zoned out by now so I will save specific questions for some other time.

Also, yes I am over 18, 24 in fact so no need to ask me if I'm old enough to start up airsoft :P

Thank you and hope to get into airsoft really soon!

Firstly, welcome to the forums.

I believe our glasses will fit over prescription glasses, if not there should be a pair of larger goggles around that will do the job.

All of the above statements are true. The "free" is referring to the membership/casual membership charge and the $10 we charge for our CQB facility. You will not be charged for these for your first four games, however you will need to pay to use club gear.

PepsiCo wrote:-Does TAG have a club armorer that I could go through (once I become a member) to help me import guns from overseas? (I hate hate hate HATE dealing with customs, as do most importers or overseas shoppers)

TAG has no armourer, mainly because it is of absolutely no benefit as far as customs/the law is concerned. The only thing that will prevent an airsoft gun from being imported is it being capable of fully automatic fire, which is easily taken care of by any decent international airsoft retailer. The only other hold up will be if they decide to charge you GST, but that's as easy as calling them up and giving them your credit card details.

As for AEG vs GBB, unfortunately you won't find many GBBs in TAG (apart from the small pile of gas pistols). We have plenty of AEGs which most of us won't mind you groping the hell out of.

Seriously, any other questions feel free to ask here. Most of us have too much spare time.

Also, before you go out and drop some cash on a gun, I would recommend giving us a link to the one you're looking at. We can steer you away from spending unnecessary money, as well as pointing out flaws/terrible makers.

Re: New/Keen/Many Questions :D

Thank you for the thorough reply!

Well I have been pretty dead set on GBBRs as I would like to own one for the joy of having one and it would be a bonus if I could use it at club days (hoping I can downgrade most of them with different buffer springs to meet the clubs' FPS rule of 350 CQB/Outdoors).

One GBB I was really interested in was the King Arms M4: http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/king-arms-co ... rifle.html as it also has the ability to be turned into an AEG by swapping out the internals. Also the KA gives you some neat stuff that let's you adjust the power of the rifle to lower or increase in the box which would be a nice bonus to downgrade to meet club FPS rules.
But then I read from different forums and reviews that G&P would be a better way to go for GBB so then I looked into this G&P M4: http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/gandp-woc-x- ... 18528.html
I haven't had much time to look into too many details about the G&P but from the little research I've done, they're reliable.

I haven't given too much time on AEGs as again, I am quite set on the idea of having a GBB even though it can be time/money consuming to tune/fix/what-have-you. But my biggest gripe for going GBB instead of AEG is that AEGs are not that much cheaper than some of the GBB out there.

Well my biggest requirements on a gun would be as follows:
-Full Metal build (Mainly Upper/Lower Reciever) - Internals being metal/aluminium is preferred (Yes, this pretty much throws Tokyo Marui out the window on the basis they are plastic builds with aluminum plating at best)
-Has a rail system (like the ones on the two guns I linked earlier)
-Realistic functions (e.g. Removeable hand rail(if there is one), Working bolt catch, realistic field strip, some other realistic features that suddenly escapes my mind)
-MUST BE AN M4!!!! with adjustable stock. (NO FIXED STOCK and preferably not one of those folding stocks either)
-Preferred long barrel 13"-14" ish
-Preferably a GBB but could be AEG depending on cost/build materials/quality
-Did I mention, it must be an M4?

Going back to the two guns I linked, the KA M4 and the G&P M4 WOC-X, those two guns are the ones that I would be getting if there was no big flaws with them. As of now, I am leaning more towards the G&P for the better internals (or so I've heard) and G&P being a more reliable company (or so I've heard). The reason why I am looking mainly at the KA and G&P is that they seem to be the few companies with a lot of inter-usable parts without the bank breaking price tags. I originally looked at ICS but apparently ICS can only use ICS parts mostly due to the nature of their build or something rather.

Couple more question before I sign off for the night
- If I were to have a GBBR within club FPS regs, would I be in any ways disadvantaged or disliked for having a GBB? (As in will a GBB more likely to cause injury or make too much noise which may annoy team members, kind of deal) or does it really not matter which gun is used in the club so long as it meets the club regs?
- I also read on the club documents or something that Hi-Cap magazines are a no-no and magazines with 100rnd capacity was the maximum. (I realize this won't be a problem for me if I do go GBB, but nice to know for future in case I do go AEG ;)

Anyways, I really do want to check out the club so in the end, I want to get a gun that would best fit in the club atmosphere, even if it means getting an AEG over a GBB

Sorry for the really long read, but as you may have noticed, I have been researching flat out for the last couple weeks and my head is rattling with a bazillion questions that need answering or I'll end up losing sleep over it. And all the forums everywhere says the same thing, 'Go to your nearest club and let them deal with your insanity.' ... so here I am :D

Thanks again!

Re: New/Keen/Many Questions :D

Welcome PepsiCo

One thing you haven't noted, that I should point out is GBB 'cooldown'. When operating the gas rifles in low temperatures it's likely your weapon will fire the first dozen shots okay, but as the rifle vents more gas, the mechanisms may freeze entirely and dump all the gas in the magazine. At the very least, you'll probably experience significantly lower rate-of-fire. This particular problem is an issue in the south island.

From what I've read regarding GBBs, it's important to purchase a rifle that has plenty of options when it comes to upgrades and spare parts - same goes for an AEG for that matter. VFC, for example are not compatible with other GBB manufacturers.

A popular misunderstanding. You're new here, so I'll let that slide. :P

They are no more likely to cause injury over any other markers if they comply with our FPS limit. The only disadvantage is the cooldown effect i mentioned earlier, lower ammo capacity and yes they are louder.

Correct. Sub 100 rounds only.

Re: New/Keen/Many Questions :D

As there are pretty much no GBBs in TAG (Other than a TM MP7), I can't really point out any flaws in those gun you linked. It doesn't matter anyway, your research seems to be pretty thorough.

For adjusting the FPS on a gas gun, I believe you need an NPAS. Pretty sure it replaces the nozzle unit and can be adjusted to allow more/less gas through the nozzle giving more/less FPS... but don't quote me on this since I really have no idea what I'm talking about.

At the end of the day, you want to be using something that you enjoy using. An important thing to consider is the cost and availability of replacement parts. Guns break, both AEGs and GBBs and you need to know that when they do go bust, you will have the ability to fix them up.

The only real downside to GBBs as far as I am aware (other than needing both BBs and gas) is the consistency. If you are under the limit first thing in the morning, you might find you are a bit over by midday due to the heat.

To answer your questions:

Bringing a GBB out to the field would not be an issue. They wouldn't make any more noise than some of our EBBs and maybe less noise than some of our less finely tuned AEGs. As long as you can get the FPS below our club limit, any gun is welcome.

As for mag capacity, yes 100 rounds is the maximum capacity for magazines. If you go with an AEG M4, you won't have any trouble as there are a ton of low/mid cap magazines.

Re: New/Keen/Many Questions :D

Ah I see, so GBB isn't as popular as electrics and no I hadn't accounted for temperature fluctuations and mags pretty much freezing up (even though I've noticed it on my pistol). I guess I would be at a disadvantage on a cold inter morning.

Hmm, I guess I should start looking into some electrics too. Though I gyess the king arms GBB would be advantageous since it can be both gas and electric operated.

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated. Guess I have some more research to do :D

Re: New/Keen/Many Questions :D

I wouldn't be completely turned off GBBs. If you buy one and it turns out to be unreliable due to the cold, there is always the option of selling it via trademe or ASNZ (Once you become a member).

But yeah, more research required. Good luck.

Don't buy anything without coming to a game first. We've already got all the stuff you need to see.
A gas gun takes a lot of money and time to get it running properly.

At least don't buy anything without posting it on here first. There's a lot of shit out there.

When you read reviews, bear in mind that they're often written by american 14 year old kids who will give a complete peice of shit a stellar review.

Re: New/Keen/Many Questions :D

Yeah, I was surprised to see how many little kids had airsoft rifles doing reviews and unboxing vids and what not, just reading the product description from the site they bought it from.
As of last night, I'm so very torn between an electric and GBB. I can only afford to purchase one and maintain only one. I want a GBB for the fun of having one (and it really does look fun) but I also want to skirmish, otherwise I see no real point in owning an airsoft as I'm not much of a collector and I'd rather collect beer bottles (they're a lot cheaper and can be found free on the streets of Christchurch on a Sunday morning).
Lame jokes aside, would anyone have any suggestions as to a nice GBB, skirmishable rifle of the M4 variant (Mk18s are ok too) but like I mentioned, must be full metal. Even an EBB rifle with a solid metal build would be nice.

DEADMEAT wrote: Im with you zombie! G36C all the way!! whoop whoop!

I would like a G36C too, but I don't know what it is about M4's but ever since I first saw them while playing Counter-Strike 1.7 or whatever it was back then, I've been love struck and no other gun will do for me (Maybe a Mk18 since it's pretty much a modded M4 variant, kinda).

Well, I will definitely try to make it to a game either this week or next week (schedule is looking a bit rough at the moment). But I would really be keen to see some of these guns in action. Youtube vids are great to see what things are like but they're not as good as seeing the real deal. Like how before I bought my WE M9 B. Burton, I thought the gun would be kinda quiet and I'd be able to happily shoot away at some drawn targets in my room. When I got the gun and put some gas and took my first shot, I thought I blew the damn thing to pieces at how louder it was compared to vids. Every now and then, shooting it in my room makes my ears ring a little. AND I LOVE IT :D

Well you're welcome to come out to a game when ever your schedule allows it. Who knows, after checking out the guns we run you might be able to make a decision.

Re: New/Keen/Many Questions :D

Well I've quickly browsed over some AEGs on ehobbyasia.com and so far I'm impressed (but not really surprised) to see so many full metal M4 systems out there. Now, my only problem is to satisfy my need for realism!
Reason why I wanted a GBB was mainly for the realism of it all and if I'm getting an AEG, I damn well want it to be as realistic as it can get (on a budget, of course  ) and for future reference, my budget for a stock rifle would be $300 USD (I use USD because I'm most likely to get shipped from over seas and they mainly deal in USD). This budget does not include Shipping/Battery/BB/Gas/Etc as I could source those from anywhere anytime.

I've checked out a lot of G&P (they're quickly becoming my favorite mainly for the fact they specialize in M4 and M4 variants :P ) but I'm unable to confirm if these have a working bolt catch. Like when you run out of BB's the bolt locks back and you can't fire unless you release the catch and things like seeing the piston or whatever it is moving through open bolt systems.

At this point, I'm not TOO bothered by which company makes it as long as it satisfies my need for realism and that it is reliable and made of some sort of metal. But drooling over which gun I would love to have aside, I would really love to come out this Sunday if I was able to get my hands on some club gear. I have nothing in terms of what is suited for airsoft like goggles and vests and gloves and the list goes on but I understand that I can rent the basics like gun/ammo/goggles.

In short, if you guys have goggles or glasses that can fit over my prescription ones, can borrow a gun/ammo (I could bring what's left of my .2 bbs ~ about 1500~2000 shots) and other necessities, if there are any, I would really love to come out for a game with you guys on the 14th this Sunday if it is still on.

Also I own a WE M9 B.Burton, could I bring that out with me too? I don't have a holster or anything but maybe I could borrow a chrono to see how well it shoots and what not and see if I could use it in future club games.

Thanks for all the help so far guys! Feels good I can get some of these questions out of my head :D

Re: New/Keen/Many Questions :D

I wouldn't recommend a GBBR as a first rife just because of the constant maintenance and base upgrades needed to get it skirmishable, you would be better off getting a AEG as a first gun that preform great out the box.

Now i'm not saying not to get a GBBR they are awesome and fun to use but you might not be happy with the performance out the box until you spend a few hundred on them, as has been mentioned the cool down during winter/cold days will cause problems performance will take a big hit. Running Co2 will fix the cool down and consistency problems caused by the weather but will put more wear on parts and would need to be replaced sooner, I'm unsure if the WA platform has Co2 mags and are compatible with all systems, the WE platform has Co2 mags but can only be used in WE guns.

I've checked out a lot of G&P (they're quickly becoming my favorite mainly for the fact they specialize in M4 and M4 variants ) but I'm unable to confirm if these have a working bolt catch. Like when you run out of BB's the bolt locks back and you can't fire unless you release the catch and things like seeing the piston or whatever it is moving through open bolt systems.

As far as I am aware only AEGs that have a functioning bolt catch when the mag is out are the new Tokyo Marui but could be wrong about this, you may have to sacrifice some realism features to get a gun within your budget.

But as has been said head out and talk to people and get a hands on with some different weapons.
